Rough Terrain Forklift Safety
Intended for construction locations, where materials should be transported on surfaces which are not paved are rough terrain forklifts. The proper and safe use of rough terrain forklifts is essential to be able to ensure the wellbeing of both the operator and other employees at the work location.
Terrain
These trucks are built for rough terrain, but care must still be taken to avoid tip overs. The forklift is top heavy and when lifting, must just be operated on level ground.
Speed
Even though there are no Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations governing forklift speed limits, forklift drivers should drive at a safe speed every time. Driving on terrain that is rough or uneven needs even more caution. Steering, in particular, can be risky at higher speeds.
Incline
When you are operating on a slope, you should keep the load on the equipment's uphill side. The rule of thumb is drive up, and back down. Never attempt to raise a load when operating on an inclined surface. The change in the center of gravity could cause the machine to tip over.
Safety Devices
Like any driver, forklift operators are obliged to put on seat belts. Make certain that the overhead guard is securely in position. Depending upon the working surroundings, hearing and eye protection may need to be worn. Make sure that a working fire extinguisher is mounted on the forklift.
Weather
The operating conditions of a forklift can be affected by weather conditions. Speed, turning and load handling may need to be adjusted to guarantee safety when operating a forklift in snow, ice or rain.
