Lift Truck Battery Safety
The big industrial sized batteries used to power electric lift trucks should be charged regularly and properly maintained. Safety procedures must be followed while somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is really important to check battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is important for workers working with a forklift battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG consist of safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both clothes and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging place must be an emergency eyewash post. The path to the station must not be blocked and an injured worker must be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging area within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger should be at the same amperage. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
When in the vicinity of a charging area and battery, open flames are not allowed. Do not permit items such as lighters or matches to be used while someone is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging are also needs to be well ventilated. The recharging method can release gas. These fumes are both explosive and poisonous.
